KUCHING: Permanent Secretary to Sarawak Tourism Ministry, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, yesterday said the state is targeting to improve the ranking of the homestay industry from sixth to third place in the country.

He said that the industry in the state had showed much improvement but this wasn’t enough as there are many aspects that need to be looked into to bring homestay industry to a higher level.

“Those involved in the homestay industry must be more creative and effective to attract the tourist to stay at their homestays by holding activities or bringing them to interesting places here.”

“The ranking itself had showed us where we stand but the extraordinary attraction that our state offers must be taken advantage of,” he said when officiating at the Retreat Homestay Sarawak Convention held at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) multi-purpose hall here yesterday.

Also present was Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) State director, Suriya Charles Buas.

Ik Pahon added that the federal government will be giving away certain amount of fund to help develop the industry.

“We are also focusing on those living in the rural areas who are interested in this homestay business to make them involved in the tourism industry as this could help them generate household income.”

“As of April this year, the total of homestay tourists is1,194 persons and the income generated from them amounted to RM379,780,” he said.

“Sarawak now has 31 homestays and 469 homestay proprietors who are registered under MOTAC.”

He also proposed special award to be established to give recognition to the industry players.

On the event, he also suggested it be held annually so that the participants could exchange ideas with related agencies taking part.

Yesterday a total of 90 participants took part in the three-day convention during which each participant made a presentation on their respective homestay.
